Principals Letter
Dear St Augustine’s families,
Firstly, I would like to applaud all of the children in their ability to manage the return to onsite learning. These sudden changes are not easy and some cope better than others. Even though being at school is where they should be, it is not always a smooth transition and some did find it challenging.
SPORTS
The one thing that we can be certain of in these times is that we are required to be very flexible and adaptable in our thinking and planning.
A huge thanks to Emma for quickly re-organising the Year 5/6 football and netball teams to compete in Castlemaine last Friday and then our own Athletics Sports for Years 3-6 children on Monday. We needed to have the Year 3-6 sports this week so we had entries and data for the District Sports Thursday. We will organise a sporting opportunity for the F-2 children later in the year.
100 DAYS AT SCHOOL
A huge CONGRATULATIONS to all of our Foundation children who celebrated being at school for 100 days and are now 100 days smarter. They all dressed up as 100 year old little people and engaged in lots of ‘100’ based activities. I did mention to them that 100 year old people would have to have a ‘nana & poppy’ nap in the afternoon – the children didn’t agree but Mrs Bucknall and Miss Shanahan were very excited about that thought!!!!
Thank you to Mrs Bucknall and Miss Shanahan for providing such a wonderful celebration and just in time before we went into lockdown.
CHESS
Any children wanting to learn chess can come along to the library during break times.
St Augustine’s are then going to enter a team or 2 into the Mt Alexander Chess Tournament in September. We have entered this competition a few years ago and the children that went across had such a wonderful time.
SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION
The Sacrament of Confirmation will go ahead this weekend for those children who, in Year 3/4 have already prepared but been unable complete due to previous lockdowns. We pray for these children and their families in finally being able to complete this Sacrament. Thank you to Miss Shanahan and Fr John in re-organising this for the third time.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Fr John on celebrating 40 years since his Ordination, a wonderful effort.
Happy 85th birthday celebrations to Fr Flanagan.
2022 Foundation enrolments
If you have a child or know of someone who has a child coming to school next year and have not yet enrolled, please see Amber for an enrolment form.
We will open up for school tours as soon as we can. Enrolment interviews will also take place as soon as we can have visitors on site again. These may have to be phone interviews if our restrictions are not eased by the end of Term 3.
BOOK WEEK
This year we will celebrate Book Week in the last week of Term 3, fingers crossed for some easing of restrictions. We will have a book parade so children (and parents) can start thinking of a book week costume (day TBC). We will also have a book fair that will run across the week where children can purchase books and stationary goodies and there will also be cross age activities including a book quiz. More details to come as we get closer.
ANDREW FULLLER
I have had great feedback from the Andrew Fuller webinars that I have recently advertised as well as expressions of disappointment. When any more of these opportunities arise again I will continue to post to families. Thank you to Kate for sharing her notes and the main points of the webinar.
All powerful God,
Send your Holy Spirit upon our candidates for Confirmation, to be their helper and guide.
Give them the Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding, the Spirit of Right Judgement and Courage, the Spirit of Knowledge and Reverence.
Fill them with the Spirit of Wonder and Awe in your presence.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen
Many blessings,
Mrs Sonia Turner

Foundation 100 Days of School
The Foundation students celebrated 100 days of being at school on Wednesday 4th August. The classroom was decorated to have a party day with students and teachers coming dressed as 100-year-old people with a lot of walking sticks. There was a cheer heard in the hallway as they crossed off the number 100 on the counting chart. What an achievement!
Some highlights of their 100 days at school have been doing writing from Despina, playing with her friends from April, going outside for Amelia, learning about P and having popcorn for Charlotte, Eddie has enjoyed sport with Miss Ryan and running races, Leni doing art and using paint and Charlie thought today’s celebration of 100 days was very exciting.
Students in Foundation have made many learning insights throughout their 100 days of school with lots of focus on learning through shared experiences. Charlotte has learnt the letter A, William can count backwards from 20, Leonard can count to 100, Charlie has learnt to write, Aisha the numbers in maths and Savannah how to write the lower-case letters. One very excited student Eddie was so happy that he has learnt to be a STAR in his 100 days of school!
The writing task for the day was to think about how you could spend $100. Each student was given a paper $100 note and their minds were racing. Graidy thought he could buy a horse, Harley wanted to buy the whole Red House Bakery, Ivy wanted to buy 100 things, Eddie thought he could buy a house to live in, Amelia wanted a bunch of toys, Laker a black and orange car and Charlotte all the toys in the shop.
The day lead to the Big Event on the visual calendar where students got to celebrate with a dance party and enjoy all the learning they have been involved in over 100 days at St Augustine’s.

Students with underlying conditions
Recent and most up to date information for children in schools:
Students with underlying conditions (such as hay fever or asthma)
If a student has persistent symptoms due to an underlying condition such as hay fever or asthma, the student should still be tested for COVID-19 if they develop symptoms that are different to or worse than their usual symptoms. Students whose symptoms are clearly typical for their underlying condition can continue to attend school.
Parents/carers should also consider getting a medical certificate from the child’s treating GP to confirm that it is safe for them to attend school with persistent symptoms that may overlap with some of the symptoms of COVID-19 such as cough or runny nose.
Young children with persistent mild symptoms
For younger children (in Prep to Year 2) who have had a negative COVID-19 test that was taken after they developed symptoms, the decision about return to school should be made in conjunction with the child’s treating GP. If the GP is satisfied the child has recovered from their acute illness, is otherwise well and does not need a repeat COVID-19 test, the child can return even if they are not completely free of symptoms. Any worsening of symptoms will require review and repeat COVID-19 testing, if considered appropriate by the doctor.
Students with a negative COVID-19 test whose symptoms have completely resolved do not need a medical certificate to return to school.

COVID Guidlines
Only essential visits to the school are permitted at this time.
Visitors to school grounds must sign in using the school QR code and comply with physical distancing, sanitising and face mask requirements as per current government directives.
Parents and Friends
The Trivia Night has been postponed due to the current COVID guidelines. A new date to be advised.
Cyber Safety
Each fortnight we will post helpful eSafety Information for Students and Families here.
The attached video link, Swoosh, Glide and Rule Number 5, is a fun and engaging way to explore online safety with young children. Teaching children to ask for help is key to keeping them safe. This book helps set the foundation for good online habits early so they can carry this through to school and beyond - be safe, be kind, ask for help and make good choices.
Child Safety
St. Augustine's Primary School Maryborough demonstrates a strong commitment to the care, safety and wellbeing of all students at our school.
Each fortnight we will be sharing information around child safety and the obligations that we have as a school, staff and community. All of our Child Safe policies and procedures are accessible on our website at samaryborough.catholic.edu.au.
Supervision of Students Information for Parents
ENROLMENT
This term we will be conducting enrolment interviews for 2022 enrolments. If your family is not returning to St. Augustine's next year please advise us via email to admin@samaryborough.catholic.edu.au.
Likewise, if you have another child or know of someone who has a school age child for 2022, please contact the school asap.
An 'Application for Enrolment' form, as per link below, needs to be completed and emailed to admin@samaryborough.catholic.edu.au.
Alternatively, forms are also available in the school office.
We will be contacting families in Term 3 when we commence the enrolment interview process.
STAR Students
At St Augustine's we are a SWPBIS school (School Wide Positive Behaviour in School) and we have a STAR culture. STAR stands for:
S - stay safe
T - take pride
A - act justly
R - respond positively
Just like children are explicitly taught academics, acceptable behaviour is also explicitly taught. STAR awards are given at Assembly each fortnight, exceptional STARs are sent a postcard which qualifies them to morning tea with the Principal at the end of the term.
STAR lessons are taught around a nominated behaviour blitz. Children are taught how to be a STAR in all places they go and what the acceptable behaviour looks like. Examples of a lessons: how to stay safe in class, in the library, the toilet, at the bus stop, on the playground or when walking to the swimming pool.
Canteen
Canteen will be open every Friday. All orders must be placed through CDFPay by 9.30am each Friday. No cash is accepted. Please see link below and instructions for setup.
Parish News

Parking & Road Safety
SAFETY ALERT
There are a number of students who continue to cross Burke Street between cars at our very busiest time of the day, school pickup. We encourage all families to PLEASE USE THE SCHOOL CROSSINGS.
There are three minute parking bays in Burke Street outside the school entrance. Your co-operation in only parking in this area for the specified time would be appreciated. These parking bays are for quick pick up and drop off for students leaving early due to appointments and illness.
Likewise we also ask parents to respect the parking restriction on the disabled parking area.
Please observe road rules around our school for the safety of all of our children.
* Schools have 40km zone.
* Parking behind the church & tennis courts is STAFF ONLY parking.
* Please use the children's crossing on Burns, Kars St and Burke St.
* For safety purposes, please avoid letting your children exit or enter a car whilst on the road or stopped at the crossings. Please do not double park.
Thank you for your co-operation.
Student Illness & Absence
If your child is unwell please keep them at home.
This includes coughs, colds, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea and any other contagious illnesses.
Coughs & Colds
Children can return to school once symptoms have eased and they are not actively coughing or blowing their nose.
Vomitting & Diarrhea
Children can return to school 48 hours after the last episode.
We will send children home if they present with any of these symptoms whilst at school.
Notifying Absences
All absentee notifications should be recorded either through the Parent Access Module (PAM) or directly to the school office by phone or email to admin@samaryborough.catholic.edu.au prior to 9.30am on the day of the absence. Please do not send notes of absence through to classroom teachers on Class Dojo as they may be absent or unable to check messages prior to commencement of class.
If a student is absent and we have not received any form of notification by 9.30am, a text message will be sent to parents asking them to call the office or send a reply text.
Bus Travel
Bus travel on the country buses is available for students at St Augustine’s School and arrangements are made through the bus co-ordinator, Stephen Broad, at the Maryborough Education Centre on 5461 7900. Parents of the student/s must organise the pass through MEC at least two days prior to travel. Students cannot travel on the country buses without a pass. The town bus does not require a pass but costs 50cents a trip, payable on the day of travel. Please advise the office if your child will be travelling on any of the buses so we can update our bus rolls.
IMPORTANT
All bus travel requires parents/guardians to complete a Public Transport Victoria (PTV) Application for Permission to Travel form prior to any bus travel. This form can be emailed direct to Stephen Broad at MEC, Stephen.Broad@education.vic.edu.au. It is important that this form is completed as these details will be used in the event of an emergency.
